GERUND (VERB + -ING)

Τι δηλώνει?

Το γερούνδιο, όπως και το απαρέμφατο (infinitive) είναι ένας ρηματικός τύπος. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το γερούνδιο είναι ένα ουσιαστικοποιημένο ρήμα και μάλιστα πολλές φορές αντικαθιστά ολόκληρες προτάσεις (αναφορικές, χρονικές, αιτιολογικές κλπ.) προκειμένου να κάνουμε πιο "οικονομικό" και περιεκτικό τον λόγο μας.

e.g. I like running, swimming and living a healthy lifestyle. (ουσιατικοποιημένα ρήματα: το τρέξιμο, το κολύμπι, το να ζω ... )
e.g. I can´t understand her complaining about the hotel. The service was excellent. (αντικαθιστά ολόκληρη ερωτηματική πρόταση: .... why she complained .... )

Χρήσεις:

Το γερούνδιο χρησιμοποιείται μετά από:
1. Τις προθέσεις (prepositions: at, by, from, about, on, of ... )
e.g. We succeed by working hard all year.
e.g. I’d like to know more about travelling the world.
e.g. Some people are afraid of living alone.



2. Ρήματα που δηλώνουν:

a. προτίμηση/αρέσκεια/δυσαρέσκεια:
 love, hate, enjoy, like, fancy,  dislike, feel like
e.g. Bob doesn't feel like eating  pizza tonight.
e.g.I dislike seeing people hit animals.




b. αισθήσεις/ σκέψη-προβληματισμό:

e.g. Tony couldn´t resist taking another piece of the chocolate cake.
e.g. The manager proposed working in two teams.

3. Τα ρήματα: need, want, require (=χρειάζομαι/απαιτώ) όταν αυτά έχουν παθητική σημασία.
e.g. This shirt needs ironing. (= .... needs to be ironed)
e.g. Your eyes need testing. (= ...to be tested)

4. Tις εκφράσεις:
 can’t stand / can’t help= δεν αντέχω
 it’s no good= δεν είναι καλό
 it’s no use= δεν χρειάζεται
 it’s not worth= δεν αξίζει
 there is no point =δεν υπάρχει λόγος
 have difficulty (in)= αντιμετωπίζω δυσκολία στο να...
 as well as = in addition to

e.g. It's just not worth explaining the situation to her. She is so stubborn!
e.g. My father can't stand listening to techno music.
e.g. As well as sailing, we also went climbing.

ΕΚΡΑΣΕΙΣ ΜΕ "ΤΟ" + GERUND 

be used to doing stg           e.g. Tom is used to waking up early.
get used to doing stg          e.g. I get used/ accustomed to living in my new apartment.
get accustomed to doing stg 
look forward to doing stg     e.g. She is looking forward to visiting Barcelona again.
6. Όταν αναφερόμαστε σε μια δραστηριότητα: go fishing/ dancing/ swimming/ shopping/ skiing/climbing/ jogging κλπ.

ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ: Ποτέ δεν ακολουθούμε την ελληνική εκδοχή των παραπάνω εκφράσεων: go for fishing
