The subjunctive

The subjunctive (= Υποτακτική)


Η υποτακτική είναι μια εμφατική μορφή σύνταξης. Χρησιμοποιείται δηλαδή προκειμένου να δώσουμε μεγαλύτερη έμφαση στα λεγόμενά μας.  Δείχνει ότι κάτι είναι επείγον (= urgent)  ή εκφράζει ένα δυνατό – έντονο συναίσθημα (=strong emotion). 
ΧΡΗΣΗ:
Eίναι πολύ σύνηθες να χρησιμοποιηθεί μετά:
a. από ρήματα που δηλώνουν command (=διαταγή)/ request (=παράκληση)/ recommendation (=πρόταση)/ preference (=προτίμηση)/ urge (= εξαναγκασμό)
I suggested (that )  +  subject    +   (should not)  +  BARE  INFINITIVE    
e.g. They recommended that he make a formal complaint to the mayor.
e.g. The boss asked that we not be late for the meeting.

 b.από απρόσωπες εκφράσεις (που δηλώνουν κάτι που επείγει)

 
e.g. It was imperative that the manager solve the problem soon.
e.g. It is urgent that the regulations not be ignored. 

 c. από ετεροπροσωπία (το υποκείμενο του ρήματος της κύριας πρότασης είναι διαφορετικό από αυτό της δευτερεύουσας που ακολουθεί).
e.g. The doctor recommended that he cut down the amount of fats.
ΣΧΗΜΑΤΙΣΜΟΣ:
Η υποτακτική σχηματίζεται περιφραστικά, χωρίς να προσθέτουμε κάποια κατάληξη στο ρήμα.  Με άλλα λόγια δεν κλίνεται.
Η ολοκληρωμένη μορφή της υποτακτικής είναι η ακόλουθη:

It is/was   +    adjective of urgency     +     (that)      + subject + (should not) +    ΒΑRE INFINITIVE  
NOTE 1st: To that και το should πολλές φορές παραλείπονται. Ωστόσο πρέπει πάντα να θυμόμαστε ότι  μετά το υποκείμενο ακολουθεί  ΑΠΑΡΕΜΦΑΤΟ (ανεξάρτητα αν το υποκείμενο είναι τρίτου προσώπου he-she-it).
NOTE 2nd: Μερικά από τα ρήματα της κατηγορίας a μπορούν να συνταχθούν με άλλους ρηματικούς τύπους (gerund, to infinitive) αλλά υπάρχει μια διαφορά στο νόημα τους.
VERB + GERUND:   insist on doing/ suggest doing something
VERB + TO INFINITIVE:   urge/ask/require somebody to do something
Ισχύουν και οι παραπάνω συντάξεις, αλλά με τη χρήση της υποτακτικής δίνουμε μεγαλύτερη έμφαση.
ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ ΣΤΗ ΔΙΑΦΟΡΑ 
suggest/ recommend +   Subjunctive --> advice   
e.g. The doctor recommended that I (should) take up exercising on an everyday basis. 
suggest/ recommend +   Gerund  -->  Let’s/ proposal
e.g. I suggest/recommend ordering Chinese tonight for dinner.

NOTE 3rd: Πολύ συνηθισμένο φαινόμενο (που εξετάζεται κυρίως στα επίπεδα C1 - C2)  είναι η ακόλουθη σύνταξη.
verb + possessive adjective (=κτητικό επίθετο) + Gerund
e.g. Tom’s parents insisted on his studying more.
e.g. The doctor suggested his staying in bed at least for a week.

1.Correct the following sentences:


  1.  It is vital that everyone will be informed about the meeting.
  2.  They suggested  him not to purchase a house near the nuclear reactor.
  3. She urged to him that he would consult an environmental specialist.
  4.  It’s imperative that the forest won’t be cleared to make room for a mall.
  5.  The citizens demanded to the mayor to halt plans for the new landfill.
  6. It’s important for the company’s ordering an environmental-impact.
  7. They preferred that the management was told about the incident.
  8. It is crucial that the trees in this area are not cut down.
