GET - READY

Get across

1. communicate (= επικοινωνώ με κάποιον)

e.g. Although I couldn't speak the language, I managed to get my meaning across when necessary.

2. to make someone understand something. (= περνάω ένα μήνυμα/ καθιστώ μια ιδέα κατανοητή) 
e.g. Your meaning didn't really get across.
e.g. He's not very good at getting his idea across.

Get along with - Get on with
1. to have a good / friendly relationship with someone. (= έχω καλή σχέση με κάποιον/ τα πηγαίνουμε καλά)

e.g. Even though there are six of them sharing the house, they all get on well with each other.
e.g. He doesn't get along well with his mother-in-law.
e.g. Our new boss is very easy to get on with.

Get around

1.(for news) to become known (= γίνομαι γνωστός/ γνωστοποιώ μια είδηση)

e.g. It's a small place, so news and gossip get around pretty quickly.
e.g. The news of his arrest got around quickly.
e.g. News soon got around that Matthew was back in town.

2. to find a way of avoiding a difficult or unpleasant situation (=καταφέρνω να αποφύγω μια δυσάρεστη κατάσταση)

e.g. There is no way of getting around it - you are going to have to tell her the truth.

e.g. Isn't there any way of getting around the regulations?

Get away (from)

1.  to go away from someone or something (= φεύγω μακριά από κάποιον ή κάτι)
e.g. Get away from me!
e.g. Get away from that cake!
e.g. It was so busy that Francisca couldn't get away from the phone all day.

2.  to escape from someone who is chasing you (= ξεφεύγω από κάποιον)

e.g. They tried to get away from the police but they weren't quick enough.

3. to have a holiday. (= πάω διακοπές)

e.g. We hope to get away for a couple of weeks around Christmas.

Get (sb) down

1. to cause someone to be depressed.(= χαλάω τη διάθεση κάποιου)

e.g. This weather is getting me down.

e.g. Don't let these problems get you down too much.

Get down to
1. to begin to work on something seriously. (= αρχίζω να ασχολούμαι σοβαρά με κάτι)
e.g. Now, let's get down to business
e.g. It's time I got down to some serious work.
e.g. Once it is Summer, we will get down to painting the house.

Get over
1. = to recover from illness/break-up  (= αναρρώνω) 
e.g. I thought he would never get over her illness.

e.g. It took her a long time to get over their separation.

e.g. He never got over the shock of losing his wife.

2. = to overcome a problem (= ξεπερνάω ένα πρόβλημα)

e.g. She can't get over her shyness.

Can't get over

1. = to be amazed or surprised by something. (= εκπλήσσομαι) 

e.g. I can't get over how much your kids have grown.

Get at

1. = to reach, to access to something.(= φτάνω/προσεγγίζω κάτι)

e.g. The cupboard is too high for me to get at.

e.g. The report is locked in the cabinet and I can't get at them.

2. = to suggest something indirectly, to imply. (= υπαινίσσομαι κάτι/ προτείνω με έμμεσο τρόπο) 

e.g. What exactly are you getting at? 

Get through 
1.= be connected (to someone) by phone (=συνδέομαι τηλεφωνικά)
e.g. I couldn’t get through – the line was engaged.
e.g. I finally managed to get through to Ryan on his mobile after several attempts.

2. =manage to deal with a difficult situation and stay alive until it is over (=τα βγάζω πέρα/ξεπερνάω μια δυσκολία) 
e.g. It was difficult, but we got through the 3 months of quarantine. 

Get ahead
=to make progress in your work and become successful (=σημειώνω πρόοδο/πετυχαίνω σε σπουδές- καριέρα) 
e.g. If you want to get ahead in your career, you should have discipline and work hard.
