GERUND AND TO INFINITIVE
Ας εξετάσουμε τα παρακάτω παραδείγματα:
Remember
Gerund: She remembers posting the letter. (Θυμάται ότι είχε στείλει το γράμμα) Παρελθόν
To - infinitive: Please, remember to turn off the lights when you leave the house. ( να θυμηθεί να κλείσει τα φώτα μόλις φύγει) Μέλλον
Forget
Gerund: She has never forgotten flying for the first time. ( Δεν έχει ξεχάσει την πρώτη φορά που πέταξε.) Παρελθόν
To - infinitive: William always forgets to polish his shoes. (.... πάντα ξεχνάει ... ) Παρόν - Μέλλον
ΣΥΜΠΕΡΑΣΜΑ 1ο:
Από τα παραπάνω παραδείγματα μπορούμε να συμπεράνουμε πως γενικότερα το γερούνδιο έχει παρελθοντική σημασία, ενώ το to infinitive παροντική - μελλοντική.
Stop
Gerund: After his doctor´s advice, John has stopped smoking.(He will not smoke again)
To - infinitive: She was shopping and she stopped to get a cup of coffee. (She stopped just for a moment )
ΣΥΜΠΕΡΑΣΜΑ 2o:
Όταν μετά το χρησιμοποιούμε γερούνδιο, εννοούμε πως σταματάμε για πάντα μια συνήθειά μας. Αν χρησιμοποιήσω to infinitive εννοώ πως σταμάτησα την προηγούμενη πράξη μου για λίγο προκειμένου να κάνω κάτι άλλο. Θα ξαναεπιστρέψω στην πρωταρχική μου πράξη.
Regret
Gerund: They regret going to that hotel. (= μετάνιωσαν)
To - infinitive:I regret to inform you that your application has been rejected. (= λυπάμαι, I am sorry)
Try
Gerund: Try leaving a window open at night and you'll sleep better. (= δοκιμάζω/ πειραματίζομαι)
To - infinitive:Mike tried to fix the TV, but he only made it worse. (= προσπαθώ)
Μean
Gerund: You can change the oil yourself, but it'll mean getting your hands dirty. (= σημαίνει/συνεπάγεται)
To - infinitive:She didn't mean to offend you, she's just a bit short-tempered. ( = σκοπεύω)
Gerund: She prefers drinking coffee to drinking tea.
To - infinitive: She prefers to drink coffee rather
than (to) drink tea.
To - infinitive: She was shopping and she stopped to get a cup of coffee. (She stopped just for a moment )
