Place Prepositions

 Prepositions of Place (= Προθέσεις  τόπου)

In (= μέσα)

Χρήσεις:

1.Για να δηλώσουμε ότι κάτι βρίσκεται/ συμπεριλαμβάνεται μέσα σε κάτι άλλο.

e.g. I left my key in my bag.

e.g. The folder is in your drawer.

2.Για να αναφερθούμε σε χώρα, πόλη κλπ

 e.g. I live in Greece.

 e.g. My village is located in the north of Italy.

ΑΛΛΕΣ ΠΕΡΙΠΤΩΣΕΙΣ
in the middle of (the movie/ of the day)
arrive in Athens  ΑΛΛΑ: arrive at the station
in the beginning (= at first/originally=αρχικά) 
e.g. In the beginning he bought me flowers and presents.
in the end (= finally/ at last= τελικά) 
e.g. In the end I decided to marry someone else.
in the suburbs = on the outskirts

ΑΛΛΑ:
at the beginning of (= στην αρχή) 
e.g. School starts at the beginning of September.

at the end of (= στο τέλος) 
e.g. School finishes at the end of May.

On (= επάνω σε)

Χρήσεις:
1. Για να δηλώσουμε ότι κάτι βρίσκεται ακριβώς ΕΠΑΝΩ σε μια επιφάνεια  (ακουμπάει)
e.g.I put an egg on the kitchen table.
e.g.The paper is on my desk.

2. Για να αναφερθούμε σε κάποιο σημείο του  σώματός μας.

e.g.The stick hit me on my shoulder.
e.g.He kissed me on my cheek.
e.g.I wear a ring on my finger.

3. Για να ανεφερθούμε σε μια συσκευή/μηχανή/ μέσο ενημέρωσης ή επικοινωνίας.

e.g.He is on the phone right now.
e.g.She has been on the computer since this morning.
e.g.My favorite movie will be on TV tonight.
e.g.I found the information needed for the project on the Internet.
e.g.Can you follow my account on Instagram?

4. Για να περιγράψουμε την κατάσταση στην οποία βρίσκεται κάτι. 
e.g.Everything in this store is on sale.
e.g. The bakery is on the left / on the right side of the street.
e.g.The building is on fire.
e.g.Renewable sources of energy are on great demand nowadays.
e.g.We'll be on holidays/vacation over the next 3 weeks.
e.g. They are going on an excursion to a nearby village tomorrow.
e.g.The information you asked for is on page 80.

At (=στο)

Για να αναφερθούμε ένα συγκεκριμένο μέρος.

at work
at home
at school/ university

at the cinema                         
at the bank                            
at the train station                 
at the front/back of   
at 85 Oxford Street                  
at the point that the two lines meet etc.

Next to/beside (=δίπλα σε)
e.g. Our home is next to the bank.
e.g. We sat beside the fire to get warm.

ΑΛΛΑ: besides = apart from = εκτός των άλλων
e.g. Besides clever, she is beautiful as well. 

In front of (= μπροστά από)  
You should not sit in front of the computer screen for many hours. 

Behind (= πίσω από)
The cat was hiding behind the curtain. 

Opposite (= απέναντι)
e.g. My school is opposite the football court.

Close to / near (= κοντά σε)
e.g. I want an apartment close to/near the tube. 

Between (= ανάμεσα σε 2 πράγματα)
e.g. Put the candle between the two frames.

Among (= ανάμεσα σε πολλά) 
e.g. He was standing among the crowd. 

Inside (=μέσα)

Χρησιμοποιείται για να περιγράψουμε κάτι που βρίσκεται ή συμβαίνει σε ένα δωμάτιο-εσωτερικό χώρο.

e.g. The police were watching what was happening inside the bank.

Οutside (=έξω)

Χρησιμοποιείται για να περιγράψουμε κάτι που βρίσκεται ή συμβαίνει σε εξωτερικό χώρο.

e.g. Can you stand outside the door, please.

Below (=από κάτω)

Το μεταφράζουμε ως κάτω από και χρησιμοποιείται σε φράσεις για να δηλώσουμε ότι βρίσκεται ένα επίπεδο πιο κάτω.

e.g.Don´t stay below the water for more than 5´.

e.g.below zero          below average        see below for more information.

Above (=από πάνω)

Είναι το αντίθετο του below και χρησιμοποιείται για να δηλώσουμε ότι κάτι βρίσκεται πάνω από κάτι άλλο χωρίς να υπάρχει σημείο επαφής.

e.g.The painting is above the drawer.

e.g. .... above the water        

Under (=κάτω)

under the bed       under a pile of books

e.g.Children under five are admitted free. (ηλικιακό όριο)

Beneath

Ακριβώς κάτω από κάτι. Μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί στη θέση  του under.

e.g. We sat beneath / under a tree.

e.g. Beneath / under the blanket.

Over

Είναι το αντίθετο από το under. Σημαίνει πάνω σε και σε αυτή την περίπτωση υπάρχει επαφή μεταξύ των δύω αντικειμένων, σαν το καλύπτει.

e.g.They put a blanket over him to keep him warm.

e.g.The cinema is at the end of the street.

e.g.Two very tall people were sitting in front of me.

Prepositions as adverbs

Πολλές προθέσεις μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν ως απλά επιρρήματα. Παρατήρησε τα παρακάτω παραδείγματα.

e.g. Is Susan in? (=στο σπίτι ) No, she's out. (= είναι έξω/έχει βγει)

e.g. From the mountain, we could see a village far below.

Άλλα παραδείγματα:

away (=σε διακοπές)     inside    outside    indoors      underneath

e.g.Peter is away at the moment. He's on a trip abroad. In France, actually.

e.g.Let's go indoors / inside. It's getting cold outside.

e.g.If you can't find it on top, look underneath.
