Time Prepositions

ΧΡΟΝΙΚΕΣ ΠΡΟΘΕΣΕΙΣ 


Όπως στα ελληνικά, έτσι και στα αγγλικά οι προθέσεις είναι  άκλιτες λέξεις που μπαίνουν μπροστά από ουσιαστικά, επίθετα, αντωνυμίες, αριθμητικά και επιρρήματα για να δηλώσουν τόπο, χρόνο, αιτία, τρόπο κτλ.
π.χ. Έφυγε από την πατρίδα του.

Η χρήση των προθέσεων στην αγγλική γλώσσα είναι πολύ συνηθισμένη και μας εξυπηρετεί στην καλύτερη και πιο σαφή περιγραφή των λεγόμενών μας. Γι' αυτό είναι καλό να έχουμε υπόψη μας τους ακόλουθους κανόνες όσον αφορά στη χρήση των προθέσεων.

PREPOSITIONS OF TIME (= Χρονικές Προθέσεις)

Συνοδεύουν χρονικά επιρρήματα ή χρονικές επιρρηματικές εκφράσεις.

1.ΠΡΟΘΕΣΗ: At   


 Εκφράσεις με την πρόθεση at: 
at the beginning of (= στην αρχή) e.g. School starts at the beginning of September.
at the end of (= στο τέλος) e.g. School finishes at the end of May.

ΑΛΛΑ: 
in the beginning (= at first/originally=αρχικά) e.g. In the beginning he bought me flowers and presents.
in the end (= finally/ at last= τελικά) e.g. In the end I decided to marry someone else.

*NOTE: Η πρόθεση at χρησιμοποιείται και με τις εκφράσεις: 
at night/ at midnight/ at midday  
(ΑΛΛΑ: in the middle of the day)

2.ΠΡΟΘΕΣΗ: ΟΝ   

Οn + days of the week (=ημέρες της εβδομάδας)  

e.g. on Monday, on Friday 
       on Saturday night
       on a hot summer afternoon
       on Christmas Day

On  + specific date (= συγκεκριμένη ημέρα) e.g. on 22nd July, on 1st January

3.ΠΡΟΘΕΣΗ: ΙΝ    

4. ΠΡΟΘΕΣΗ: FOR

for = για (δηλώνει χρονική διάρκεια)  +  period of time (=χρονική περίοδος που δηλώνει διάρκεια)   e.g. for three years/ for a long time/ for ever

*Είναι λέξη κλειδί για τη χρήση των Present Perfect Simple/ Present Perfect Continuous.
e.g. I have known Mark for 20 years. He is my best friend.
e.g. He has been working in this company for almost a decade.

5. ΠΡΟΘΕΣΗ: SINCE

since + a point of time in the past up to now (δηλώνει τη χρονική αφετηρία)
e.g. I have been studying English since 2003.

*Είναι λέξη κλειδί για τη χρήση των Present Perfect Simple/ Past Perfect Simple

6. ΠΡΟΘΕΣΗ: DURING

during = κατά τη διάρκεια (δηλώνει χρονική διάρκεια)  + noun (=ουσιαστικό)
e.g during the rain/ during the summer holidays

7. ΠΡΟΘΕΣΗ: BEFORE

before (=πριν) + temporal noun (χρονικό ουσιαστικό)  
                         e.g. I met Tom before the departure of his plane.

                      + gerund (=γερούνδιο) 
                         e.g. I had an energetic meal before going to the gym.

                      + sentence (= δευτερεύουσα χρονική πρόταση) 
                            e.g. It all happened before you were born.

ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ: Μετά το before δεν βάζω ΠΟΤΕ Future Tense (=Mελλοντικό Xρόνο)

after (=μετά) + temporal noun (χρονικό ουσιαστικό) 
                       e.g. He returned home after the war.

                    + pronoun (=αντωνυμία) 
                       e.g. She arrived at school after him.
                         
                    + gerund (=γερούνδιο)

                       e.g. She became a doctor after finishing her medical studies.
                   + sentence (= δευτερεύουσα χρονική πρόταση) 
                      e.g. He had stomach-ache after he had eaten the whole bowl of ice-cream by himself.

ΖΕΥΓΗ ΠΡΟΘΕΣΕΩΝ

from ... to (= από ... έως) e.g. He was sleeping from 18:00 to 20:00 a.m.

 from ... till/until(=από...μέχρι) e.g. He works from morning till night.

between ... and(=μεταξύ...και) e.g. She'll be in her office between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

about (=κατά προσέγγιση/περίπου) e.g. The train usually arrives about midday.
